A Bit Aloha & a Bit Somerset...

As we have been working on a few projects for some yet to be released news, we have had the most fun mixing ALOHA GIRL and SOMERSET. There is something about the combo of those two collections that just make the fabric sing!!

So we mixed it up a bit in one of our all time favorites classic Fig Tree patterns, Jelly Girl.

Glassheaded pins-2

The right pin for every task all in one handsome box makes for a perfect combination and an opportunity to try out all of these wonderful pins in lovely little packages. Merchant & Mills has taken the favorites from their pin collection and put them all together for a beautiful gift for yourself or for someone you love. As if that weren't enough they've made the set cheaper than buying individual boxes and have packaged them in a sturdy cardboard box to keep them all safe and sound! The set includes the following:  •    Dressmaking Pins •    Entomology Pins •    Black Bulb Pins •    Glass Headed Pins •    Small Black Safety Pins

Here is the fine print about the pins:
[Dressmaking Pins: Traditional dressmaking pins, nickel plated and made to last. A little black box full of best dressmaking pins - 32mm x 0.65mm. Weight 28g or 1oz.///Entymology Pins: Spare the butterflies and use these ultrafine black pins for your silks and antique cloths. Merchant & Mills are proud to have sourced the finest, blackest pins known to man. For butterflies and fine fabrics, these are irresistible.  38mm x 0.45mm./// Black Bulb Pins: The bulb pin lets a tag hang tidily from a safety pin and is perfectly simple. 21mm long and like safety pins but with a wide bowl at the bottom for tags etc. Already pear shaped so nothing can go wrong.///Small Black Safety Pins: Properly useful little black safety pins that you would regret not buying. A tidy amount, or boxful, of tiny (23mm) fine, black safety pins for all your safety pinning needs, except the big ones.///Glass Headed Pins: Lovely glass headed pins in a multitude of colors to suit your every mood. Multi-colored glass headed pins - easy to find in fabric! 30mm x 0.60mm.///

TODAY'S GIFTY ITEM:

Just because we don't seem to have enough days in the sale to offer you everything we have waiting, we are adding another little goody each day. For today we are sharing with you are favorite dry skin accessory for quilters...

Tinofbalm

Its a sewing product in a tin. Need I say more? This vintage feeling tin has 1 oz. of lovely balm to use for dry quilting hands. Created in Vermont since 1899, this is how they describe it, "Bag Balm was born in 1899. The salve was created to help milking cows be comfortable. Look where that's led. From quilting bees, to hardworking hands, to feet that can go the distance. From outdoor adventures, to furry friends at home. Bag Balm, it seems, is everywhere – and working as hard as ever."

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS FINE PRINT

* The Fig Tree 12 Days of Christmas sale starts on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and lasts for 12 days [usually with a Sunday off here or there].

* Each day a different kit, stocking stuffer and/or home dec goodie will be advertised- on some days several of each! Each day a special offer will be made as well.

* Each special offer will become available on that one day. Each goodie will only be available while stock lasts. Most of the items offered will sell out on that day, some will last a few days. Please believe us that some items will sell out crazy fast and some will last all day based on popularity and stock. Although we try and have and anticipate the demand, we are often surprised by your enthusiasm!! IF THE ITEM CAN NO LONGER BE FOUND THROUGH THE LINK, THAT MEANS IT HAS SOLD OUT!

* We never know which ones will sell out the fastest! If we are able to get more in stock of any popular product, we will try but we can't guarantee that anything that sells out will come back in stock. If they can, it will not be a part of the sale but something that we offer after Christmas for a separate January delivery.

* For those of you who want to continue to purchase items throughout the 12 days of the sale but want us to hold your purchases for one shipment, YOU NEED TO BUY-A-BOX. THIS IS NEW AND DIFFERENT THIS YEAR!! The box is an actual product available on our homepage.  You only need to purchase it once either before the sale starts or on the first day that you purchase a 12DAYS item- but you need to purchase it as an actual product once. Then for all the remaining purchases you make, you will simply choose the "I BOUGHT  A BOX" option in the shipping directions during the checkout process. If you buy more products than fit in the box.... WE WILL PAY FOR THE REMAINING SHIPPING!! If you do not fill up that amount by the end of the sale, we will let you know how much of a credit you have and you can choose patterns for the difference [we will only charge a partial price on the patterns so you will get a deal]. There is no way to lose in this exchange!!

• For international customers, we will calculate actual international shipping at the time of shipping and add what is necessary. We never charge anything other than actual international shipping through USPS.

BUY-A-BOX NOW. CLICK HERE.

If you do not BUY-A-BOX, your items will not be accumulated but will be shipped to you each day that you purchase them.  We know that some of you love that feeling of getting something in the mail each and every day and look forward to the "presents" arriving to you every mail day!!

As Promised...

Hutch1

Fall is in the air around here! Finally the weather seems to be turning a little bit toward my absolute favorite season of the year! Almost time for all my favorite sweaters to come out!!

Spiderwebbundle

Last week we released a new Halloween Kit in what has become our annual Halloween project made from a mix of blacks, oranges, greys and creams. We love creating these projects so much and look forward to them every year. The quilts are not from a certain line or Fig Tree collection but instead are a mix of different MODA fabrics, always starting with a few of our favorite Fig Tree oranges and going from there to see what we can come up with! Its one of my favorite parts of the process... the creating of a color palette!

In this year's bundle, the fabrics were just screaming to be made into one of our newest patterns, Navajo Stars. Now I love the original Navajo Stars ALOT... one of my all time favorite quilts.

4starflat

Navajo Stars is created entirely from SOMERSET fabrics!

Navajostars

Originally this pattern was inspired by this quilt below. I absolutely fell in love with those stars but had NO INTENTION of making them out of hexagons. When I squinted, I saw strips and we had a Honeybun coming with our collection so it was one of those light bulb moments!

Vintagehexiestarsquilt

And the moment we started working on it, it just looked and felt like the designs in a traditional Navajo blanket. Hence the name.

9-starflat

Navajostars2

1starflat

But I am also pretty sure that I like it just as much as this years Halloween bundle quilt... SPIDERWEB! Same pattern, different colors!

Spiderweb3

Spiderweb2

But ofcourse we had way too many good leftovers and so we created a second quilt with what we stil had in the bundle....

Spirderwebkit

And as promised to those of you who purchased the kit [we are making up more this week for those of you still interested], here is the info on the HALLOWEEN CHECKERBOARDS quilt, the second quilt from the bundle...

CLICK HERE for the Checkerboard Instructions in a PDF. The fnished size can be up to 58" x 66"... a perfect lap throw that can be whipped up so fast you could have it done this season!

Talk to you soon. I am going back to pattern editing and sample making. Up this week, a little friend to join some of our other creatures :-)!

Today I have a few quick things to share with you...

A NEW KIT

Spirderwebkit

What started off as an impromptu Halloween mix kit a few years ago has become a highly popular annual event with an almost cult following of classic Halloween "flavored" kits each year and this year is no different! You guys are the best customers ever!

The kits are a wonderful mix of MODA designers and the oranges, greys, blacks and creams are handpicked to work together in these classic designs. This year's kit is a Halloween take on our very popular NAVAJO STARS pattern and we are so happy with the result [the quilt literally came back from Diana's this afternoon so it is not even bound]. Speaking of quilting... don't you love it???

Anyway, this year's kit consists of a bundle of 11 fabrics and a cream with dot fabric for the background. For more info, click HERE.

MODA LOVE BLOG TOUR: FIG TREE DAY

  6a00d83451a6c969e201a511e64be1970c-800wi

... we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our newest collection, Somerset, in late September. We can't wait!

WELCOME TO FIG DAY ON THE MODA LOVE BLOG TOUR!

If this is your first time visiting here, welcome! My name is Joanna Figueroa and I have been designing fabric for MODA for over a decade now [wow that makes me feel a bit old!] and patterns for my company Fig Tree & Co and Fig Tree Quilts [over 200 patterns at this point... yikes!] for more years than I want to admit to :-). I also write books, travel to teach and teach online at Craftsy!

Moda-love_header-900x217

If this is your first time joining us for one of these fun tours, you are in for a treat! For each QUILT MARKET [Houston each October and various Spring locations in May] the designers who attend Market get together and create a special project for our SCHOOLHOUSE event [an educational event for store owners at Market] that we then share with you the following season in a blog tour. It is a wonderful way to see what everyone has been up to and what the new fabrics are. If you haven't been following along yet, you might really want to [and not just because there will be wonderful GIVEAWAYS on each and every stop on the tour]. HERE is the link to all of the designers on each day. Today I am joining the fun ladies from Basic Grey and Pat Sloan.

As always, the amazing brainchild behind these themes, ideas and projects is the amazing MODA LISSA. She knows way too many "interesting" things about all of us designers after all these years of working together so we just do whatever she tells us :-). We love her so much. MODA LOVE!!!

QUESTIONS

Question: When did you fall in love with quilting/textiles?

Answer: The year that I was married, we moved to a new town and I had a bit of extra time on my hands while I was working on my Masters degree. It was that year that I found and bought my first vintage quilt at a yard sale & signed up for a quilt class at our local "mall". I have no idea what made me do it in that particular moment other than I finally had a bit of time but I was hooked from the very first moment! I had admired textiles for a long time before that but that was definitely "the moment" of my conversion!

Question: When I teach workshops, I love...

Answer: it when people use my patterns in totally and completely new ways and with different fabric choices. It makes me feel like I "did my job" if I can see the cross over between my designs and completely different styles!

Question: What is your favorite MODA precut?

Answer: Most definitely a jelly roll. The jelly roll has inspired me to do so many new and different things that I don't think I would have ever tried had it not been for that little roll!

Question: What fuels you to create?

Answer: Its an addiction. I really can't help it. Seriously. People ask me all the time if I ever run out of ideas and I kind of laugh. I always have WAY MORE IDEAS THAN I HAVE TIME TO MAKE THEM. EVER.

VIDEO

Speaking of great ideas, here is a special little VIDEO from Market with some tips that I wanted to share with you about piecing strip sets and cutting angles! I know these are some basic tips but they have proven very, very useful to me over the years! Thanks Josh!

PATTERN

This time around, we all worked with one simple pattern that did such a great job of showcasing each and every newly debuted collection. HERE is the pattern if you want to try your hand at your own version. You can literally do it in one aftermoon, it's that straightforward!

Somersetflat

Cynthiasversion

... our Somerset version and my friend Cynthia's Somerset version with a red floral border.

We made our version from our upcoming SOMERSET fabric and backed it in our favorite butter yellow snuggle [see above]. Yum! I know this is going to be one of those quilts that the kids fight over simply because of the backing [we sell it on our site if you are in search of some].

As for the rest of us here at Fig Tree, well we got a little carried away...

Modalove1-1

... From the top left: Fig Tree greens and reds for a Christmas version, Honeysweet, Mirabelle, all Seafoam prints from several lines including Mirabelle, Fresh Cottons, Buttercup and others. Each one feels so very different!

But then we thought about MODA LOVE and about spreading it. So I challenged my monthly sewing group to choose some of their favorite Fig Tree collections and make one of their own. We had so much fun! MODA LOVE those ladies so much!! Thank you Laurie, Cheryl, Diana, Cynthia, Maggie, Mary, Anne, Patty and Joanie!

Modalove1-2

... Fig Tree Fresh Cottons, a mix of lighter Fig Tree prints, Kate Spain's Honey Honey and a mix of Fig Tree jewel tones.

We had so much fun each choosing a different Fig Tree fabric collection or themed grouping for each quilt and sewing up a storm. Since all the ladies "took" all of the latest collections that we had Layer Cakes for, I decided to make one from my all time favorite Kate Spain grouping, Honey Honey.  Serious MODA LOVE with these quilts!!

Some more about what we've been up to...

MODA LOVE: MY FAMILY

We took some time off this year to do some travelling with the family [get ready for a post about our most recent trip to Mexico soon]. As the kids get older it is getting more and more real that we won't have them here with us forever and want to enjoy them while we have them. Some of our trips have inspired new fabrics and products for me at the same time. I am nothing if not a crazy multi-tasker!

Join Us for the Pillowcase Challenge!!

We are so excited to join in on the wonderful... DRUM ROLL PLEASE....

AMERICAN PATCHWORK & QUILTING ONE MILLION PILLOWCASE CHALLENGE!!!!

Mpclogo12

Created by American Patchwork & Quilting and sponsored by the wonderful folks at MODA FABRICS [along with many others], this is not only a wonderful cause but really a lot of fun to do on your own or even more so with friends and I really hope that many of you join us and add to that quickly growing tally!! Aren't quilters amazing!?!?

So far we are at 568,688 pillowcases!

If you would like to follow along and join, please do!!

Click HERE to find out how to be counted in the official pillowcase tally on the APQ website.

HOW WE GOT STARTED

FIRST, our friends at MODA sent us a yummy stack of our upcoming SOMERSET fabrics to get the pillowcase ball rolling. Thank you lovely Lissa!

The Somerset fabrics will be in stores next month and precuts should be coming any day now!

Fabricstackonchair

... LOL, these are not all fabrics sent for the pillows, just a nice fabric shot I happened to have. But the pillowcase stack was pretty generous too!

Since they sent so much fabric, I decided that in addition to the pillowcases we sewed in the studio and am showing you today that it would be a lot of fun to get my sewing friends together and sew some more.

As you are reading this, we are getting ready to sew tonite at our monthly Fig Tree Friday night. As soon as we are finished and I have snapped a couple pillowcase shots, I will post again next week to show you what we came up with.

SECOND, we scrolled the 43 lovely pillowcase patterns that APQ has so generously provided for us [click HERE for all the patterns] and decided on 2 classic favorites, the checkerboard and the prairie point.

Pillows1

Pillowcloseup

Pillows2

We also used the special "pillowcase in a tube" method for all of our pillowcases [click HERE for that pattern specifically] and just changed up the cuff pattern on each. We love the finishing on this method and that everything is neat and tidy and with beautiful seams inside and out. It is the only way we make pillowcases at home. When we make them, we always use both a cuff and a 1" accent piece in between the pillowcase and the cuff.

Pillows3

Pillows4

THIRD, we chose our favorite local charity right here in San Leandro, the GEORGE MARK CHILDREN'S HOUSE  [click HERE for more info on them] , that we have worked with before.

Do you remember this fun event - HERE or HERE- earlier this year? That was an amazing experience and we were so proud to raise over $10,000 for George Mark!

We are looking forward to delivering all the pillowcases to them once we are done with the group sewing. The pillowcases will go to kids or their family members who are living at the hopsice.

A LITTLE BIT DISTRACTED

Speaking of pillowcases at home.... we got a bit carried away as we were working on goodies for this challenge and got inspired by some online ideas of making a loungeable pillow mat of sorts. So we pulled out a bit more of our stash, whipped up 3 standard pillowcases and simply sewed them together side by side.

Pillowtrio

Pillowstack

The result? A wonderful lounging mat for our youngest who absconded with it the moment our photo shoot was done and told both of her broghers that they were not to steal it, use it, touch it or even look at it! I guess I will be making 2 more of these soon with more "boy" fabrics.

The threads all match the main colors in the Somerset collection of course [both the kit and the Somerset fabrics are due out in stores in September, '14].

It really is a box full of lovely goodness all in one place!

As you might remember from last time around, and the time before that and the time before that..... that it usually takes me about a week to dig myself out, brush myself off and rejoin the world after Market! LOL!

Well... it seems that this time was no different. You might have already seen all the Market shots you could possibly handle... but here go mine. Up today is an overload of pictures of our Market booth. Hope you are ready!

No words. Just pics.  Hope you enjoy the Fig Tree :-)

More on the MINIS...

Okay... so I am going to try to answer all the MINI questions at once. Hopefully yours is in there!

Fan

We have 4 new minis. This week they were all available as PDF download patterns. Including a great deal on a bundle! Starting on Monday, they will also all be available as printed paper patterns. Including a bundle too :-). The PDF's will only be available from us. The printed patterns will be available from any store who purchases our patterns. As a gal who loves all things paper, the patterns don't really seem real until they come in their shiny little packages. I can't wait fo the paper patterns to get here.

We will also start shipping to stores on Monday. So if you have contacted us for the patterns, that is when they will start to ship.

We will most likely offer a fabric kit of some kind on the bundle of patterns [but probably not individually on each one seperate since they are kind of small]. Those are the kinds of things I will figure out as soon as we come back from Market in a couple of weeks.

The MINIs are all the same price as our FIG TREE THREADS, $6.50 each.

• These are not hard to make. There are no templates or half square triangles or anything else funky in any of them. All straight forward piecing. Blossom is probably the most simple of the 4 and Canned Pears has the most pieces, but they are really all quite simple.

We do also have other STANDARD PATTERNS coming out and will start showing those tomorrow... so stay tuned!

Yes, I will be posting ideas for a mini wall and how I plan to hang them [thinking of a ribbon clothesline on my wall at the moment]. But here is some vintage mini wall inspiration that I have been in love with for a while...

Miniwalls

Yes, we will be making more of them for the next release. We are a little bit addicted. If you have any Fig Tree favorites that you would like to see made into minis, please feel free to let me know. I think we are going to start with the Sail Away pattern.

Btw, thank you for the MINI love. Can't take any credit whatsoever on the idea itself. My friend Camille is the brainchild behind this MINi quilt craze! She is pretty awesome in general too.

As for each pattern, here is the info. Click HERE for more info on each mini.

CANNED PEARS

The original quilt was app. 63" x 75", blocks app. 6" x 11". The MINI is 19 1/2" x 27" and the blocks are app. 3" x 5".

STITCH

Don't feel bad if you are confused on this one... there is no standard pattern yet. We are releasing that one this summer. The MINI came first here because we just couldn't resist sharing it once the math was all done and the quilt was finished. I apologize to anyone who spent time looking for the large version of this one!
