Day #10
Thank you to all of you who shared your own Nutcracker memories with me. It is always such a treat for me to read about your lives and things that you remember. So many wonderful memories and traditions! I love it.
Our nutcracker adventure was wonderful... made that much more lovely by three beautiful girls, in their beautiful dresses with their brand new little scarves. I think it was a magical time. It went something like this.
First we made scarves.
Then we twirled around a lot and waited for our friend to arrive, in our scarf.
Then we got bored of waiting...
Then our friend finally arrived and we were on our way!
Then we joined up with another friend at the nutcracker and we sparkled.
Then we got "snowed" on in the outdoor downtown festivities.
One of our all time favorite things to make, FIG TREE SCRAP BAGS. Full of pieces leftover from our studio cutting along with fabric bolt leftovers, with a smattering of strikeoffs that never made it into fabric. They are just the most yummy thing ever. Every year at Pacific International we make up a new set of these especially for our loyal customers from that show. And every year, on Thursday morning, we have a stampede of women who come straight to the booth to see what new scrap bags we have. Some get one, some get 5 and hold them to their chests as if they have found gold as they walk around the rest of the booth to check out the kits and other goodies. I have to say that it is one of my all time favorite moments of any show. It has become so much fun to watch that the vendors around us [the same vendors who who have become our friends over the years as we are always in the same spot] just stand around, waiting with cameras to document this fun frenzy! Sometimes they have come to help us ring so that we could clear away the crowd a little.
For this sale, we made up some scrap bags especially for you. For those of you who love to sew with small bits and challenge yourself to make your own fun creations, these will be a lovely acquisition. Have fun and good luck!
You ofcourse bought every possible red and green bundle we could manage to make around here so we thought we would offer up a few Christmas Bundles that we managed to pull together from all of the leftover bolts!
I'm sure these won't be enough for you either, but its all I've got!

Day #7
You guys are a lovely and crazy group of shoppers, my friends, and we are trying hard to keep up with you but please bear with us as we have gotten a day or so backed up with the sale purchases!
Tonite, my munchkin and I are going to see the Nutcracker and I promised I would make her and her 2 BFF's, matching cream Snuggle scarves! I think I might put a bit of red fabric on the bottom if I have time. I guess I should go get on that. I will post some pictures on Monday. They all plan on wearing their red dresses with their cream scarves so that they "match". I wish I was 7 again and thinking about nothing except matching with my friends. Love it.

Today we thought we would have a bit of a Butterscotch & Rose day. We have just a few precuts left in the studio and thought that today was as good a day as any to share them with you.
So that you can do some holiday sewing with all of those classic, rich colors we are clearing out our stock and all Butterscotch & Rose precuts are 20% off!! Best deal we've got!
It always feel so odd for me to announce the arrival of one collection- in this case Butterscotch & Rose- while literally at the exact same moment, introduce the newest group that we are about to show. But sometimes that's just the way it turns out....
So, today we would like to introduce to you our newest collection, due out in stores in Spring, 2012!
Introducing
California Girl
... a Summer Inspired Retro group reminiscent of days at the Boardwalk.
... fat quarter bundle of goodness.
... jelly roll of yumminess.
And the first quilt pattern that returned from the quilter.... Star Blooms. Available in two size blocks. Shown here is the 20" block. To see the rest, come visit us in Houston or check back here for more sneak peeks!
Pattern and more info will be available in November!
Hope you're not already tired of me talking about this collection but.... BUTTERSCOTCH & ROSE HAS SHIPPED and is arriving in stores as we speak.
The timing for this quintessential, classic autumn collection couldn't be better we think. We can imagine a whole slew of projects out of it. What might you make?
And even better, we have a kit available for our most popular pattern from this collection, My Log Cabins.
Kit contains all you will need for any of the 3 variations in the pattern.
I will be back tomorrow morning with some last minute sneak peeks of what is right around the corner. I know you have all been so patient so I want to make sure I get them out to you before I leave for Houston. Don't forget to check back!
That winner, winner, chicken dinner thing... never get tired of saying it. You, however, might be tired of hearing it from me because I am pretty sure that is the title of any post I have ever done with a giveaway winner in it. LOL!! Well, at least I am consistent.
Anyhow.... thanks for your patience. At our house, it is still Tuesday at the moment. So technically I am still okay to post even though I know that for many of you, it will be Wednesday before you get a chance to check back, so sorry for the delay. A couple of deadlines hit the studio today and the post had to take a back seat.
WINNER
Thanks for playing everyone and remember that we still have more winners in the days to come so check back tomorrow and the next day and the next!!
On 9/16 at 7:50 pm Jacque said, "Enjoyed reading the bucket list and the little known facts! Thanks for sharing the pattern with us! My fav color is the blue in your line...I love how you mix it up with the colors in the blue print! Thanks for the chance to win!"
Jacque, give us a "ring" and we'll get your goodie bag out to you!
... Chips & Whetstones
VINTAGE QUILT
For the many of you who have emailed or commented on the vintage quilt I showed, I am with you on the space feeling theme of the pattern! It is apparently not a rocket related pattern at all nor a nuclear bomb shelter symbol either! Instead it is a variation on a pattern called CHIPS & WHETSTONES but I haven't been able to discover the origin of the name.
The quilt that I found was most likely made in the late 1800's due to the fabrics but I can't swear to it since I haven't had it officially looked at by anyone with enough credentials to tell me for sure!
* * * * * * * * * *
Here is another vintage lovely from the same flea market day. It was obviously an amazing day for quilts!
... look at all those wonderful colors!
... it sure is a lot of half square triangles but still a beauty I think I might recreate sometime soon!
ON THE WORK FRONT
We have a new cream bundle [Cream Bundle #6] available. These have been super popular around here so check it out while they're still here.
Talk to you tomorrow. Although it might be late at night again. That's just the way we roll around here in September.
Well hello MODA Blog Hoppers, I guess today must be my day to wow you with favorite fair food answers and random trivia about my life. Hope you are ready! We always like to give our guruLissa a hard time but truth be told, we usually have quite a bit of fun playing along. So here goes...
MY FAVORITE FAIR FOOD:
CHEESE ON A STICK It’s not nearly as bad as it sounds, I promise.
In fact I guess its not really a fair food at all but since its on a stick, I’m making an executive decision and listing it as mine. Its actually a shopping mall food!! Do you have a Hotdog on a Stick stand in your mall food fair? If you do, then you know exactly what I am talking about. If you don’t, you really ought to search one out the next time you are feeling like fried cheese. What is my excuse for eating this thing? I grew up with one in my local mall and as a teenager just couldn't resist it!
... chocolate covered orange peel. OMG.
MY GUILTY PLEASURE:
CHOCOLATE & ORANGE in any combination. The easiest to get are the chocolate covered orange sticks from Trader Joe’s although if my hub wants to bring me a special treat, he will go and acquire chocolate covered orange peel from a "real" chocolate store which is my favorite indulgence in the world!
... my favorite vintage wooden spools with some autumn leaves.
SOME THINGS FROM MY BUCKET LIST:
• Visit the South of France.
• Learn to knit. I have tried before... many times... but I just can't seem to get the hang of it!
• Go to Ireland.
• Have time to drag out my pottery wheel and make stuff. Lots of stuff.
• See the leaves turn in the autumn in New England.
• Build a cute chicken coop and have chickens in our backyard.
• Plant an entire English country garden.
• Take my best friend to Poland to see my “homeland”
• Road trip across the entire US with all of my kids and not have anyone kill each other during the time.
• Own a bed and breakfast or an inn.
... my autumn decorating is starting slowly. More tea drinking than anything else.
WHAT INSPIRES MY WORK:
COLOR. For me, it is always about the color palette. It comes in many forms and from many places such as flea markets, travel, giftwrap, vintage textiles, gardens, etc. Regardless of where I am or what I am looking at, it seems that color is always the first thing that I notice and that draws me in. After that comes design, proportion, combinations and all the rest.
... some of us here are still holding on to a little bit of summer with our vacation bracelets.
RANDOM JOANNA FACTS...
Factoid #1: I sing when no one is listening ALL THE TIME. I sing when my kid’s friends are around in order to embarrass them. I sing when people are around and they shouldn’t have to put up with my singing.
... our newest collection, Butterscotch & Rose, coming to stores in October. Precuts are shipping now!
Factoid #2: We only watch what we TIVO. It is so bad that last year, we turned on live TV for something and our youngest daughter couldn’t understand why on earth we couldn’t fast forward through the commercials. She had never watched live tv as far as she could remember!!!
... a tiny sneak peek of something coming up
Factoid #3: In our house, my hub is the one who enjoys watching his favorite movies over and over again ad nauseum. Me, I watch the James Bond movies when my dad is visiting. I can relive my high school days by watching Dirty Dancing and Footloose any time they are on tv [and I AM NOT HAPPY that they are remaking either] but other than that, I'm not much of a movie repeater.
... my favorite bucket list item right now & the subject of my project below
.. I've grown attached to these two. Kind of feel like I should name them.
COUNTRY FAIR PROJECT:
For my COUNTRY FAIR PROJECT, I thought I would share a little Chicken Scratch. Click on link below for the pdf file of the pattern. This project is now a pattern. Please visit our website to see all the patterns!
After we made this project we liked it so much that we thought we might make it into a regular Fig Tree Threads patterns after the Blog Hop is done. So it will be here available for free download for the next week or so and then it will become a regular pattern.
We have also made up a fewKITS for Chicken Scratch. Kit includes the flour sack towel, all the fabric and floss you will need and a printed out version of the pattern. Click here for more info.
And if you haven't had enough yet, here is my video from the MODA Blog Hop at Spring Market. Why is it always so painful to watch yourself on film? Anyone, anyone?

And if you have made it all the way through this post, then you really deserve to win the giveaway! Comment and tell me your favorite color that you would like seen added to an upcoming Fig Tree collection or if you can't think of one, your favorite color that we already use.

You have to go visit Lynne tomorrow for her day on the MODA blog tour [well, you don't HAVE to but it would be nice LOL]. Links to everybody are here.
I can't even believe that our summer is not so slowly coming to a close. I know its kind of an artificial end and that we could all stay in summer mode for a bit longer but I guess we have to listen to the calendar! And so our SCHEDULED summer is almost over and I don't think I am quite ready.
My tomatoes aren't quite ready yet, either!
In the Kitchen...
This morning our FARM FRESH TO YOU box of goodies arrived as it does every week. Its a wonderful thing and even though we are growing some of our own veggies this summer, the weekly box keeps us stocked with everything we might need. This week the box came at 11:00 and by noon I had sauteed up a few things for a quick staff snack. We all took a break from designing, shipping and cutting to eat some sauteed pattypan squash with onions, garlic and herbs. Yum!
On vacation...
Last weekend we were also able to squeeze in one more long weekend vaca to Monterey. What a beautiful and restful place!
Vacationing with 3 munchkins ages 6 to 13 in one car and one room is not always what its cracked up to be but with some good "divide and conquer parenting" all the interested parties were able to: go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, go window shopping in Carmel, return to the laser and mirror maze place 4 times, eat ALOT of shrimp at Bubba Gump's, do a little back to school shopping for kids and mommy too, eat some yummy French food which included some amazing Sonoma coast wine and a giant bowl of mussels and clams in a garlic and herb wine sauce, watching a couple of in room movies, having French Crepes with strawberries and Nutella, kicking my son's butt at pool, eating Lasagna for the first time in 10 years because we were trying to be like Garfield the cat [that last one will only make sense to you if you read the Garfield comics like my boys do], stopping at the best roadside veggie stand in Castroville, CA [home of the artichoke] I had seen in ages and buying 20 baby artichokes and 10 baby avocados that we are still eating, walking through the Strawberry Festival in Watsonville, CA.... okay I think I will stop for fear of boring you with more food stories. It does sound like we did nothing but eat all day long, doesn't it?
I guess its time for back to school haircuts too, huh? I'm keeping that lazy summer look going as long as I can on them. Unfortunately Ben's school has a haircut code. Bummer.
In the office...
For those of you who have fallen in love with some of our newest bundles, you might want to go take a look here for some new fun ones.
And just because we thought they were irresistible, we added some of these to the site. Isn't that just the cutest twine you have ever seen?
I am in Kansas. Crazy, I know! Teaching and lecturing about color and design to some fabulous quilters and fabric lovers. I love our customers. They are generous and committed and make this business so much fun!
Oh and by the way, don't even think about the Dorothy and Toto jokes. My hub is emailing them to me on a regular basis throughout the day! At least he is entertaining himself while I am gone!
ButI digress. I promised to let you know as soon as we had some new bundle lovelies up..... well, we might have one or two or three all lined up and ready for new homes..
INTRODUCING "BEACH" BELLA SOLID BUNDLES.
...Oh my gosh, just makes me want to go to the beach right now!
