Zigzag Quilting

Recently I made an oversized pillow for my upcoming book, Christmas Figs, with the lovely ladies at FQS and I needed to quilt it. Well my long time friend and quilter, Diana, no longer lives right around the corner from my house so unless I wanted to ship the pillow to her in the Pacific Northwest, I needed to figure out a solution on my own. Plus there was that whole deadline thing happening too.

So I had seen some "uneven" straight line quilting that I loved before, something about the lines the moment they became uneven, made the entire thing feel like hand quilting to me. I wasn't sure why it felt so different from regular straight line stitching but I absolutely loved the effect of it. I  experimented with the method a little bit with some pillow props at the last Market and I was very happy with how they turned out so I decided that I was going to do my version of utility stitching or quilting on this book project.

I made my zigzag stitch as long and as large as my machine would allow and I played around with the proportions a bit until I liked how the lines felt when they were next to each other. It took a few different experiments and had one that I liked and voila... Insta zig zag straight stitching that looks almost like large hand stitching when it is done. Seriously... I love how the finished look feels all vintage and slightly puckered and yet even all at the same time.

Many of you wanted to know how I did it when I first showed this pillow on Instagram so hence this post. That is all there is to it. Aurifil ivory #2000 thread on the machine and in the bobbin. I seriously recommend that you try it!

 

Introducing CHRISTMAS FIGS!

Hello My Friends!

I know that's in well past Christmas and not yet Christmas in July but in case you haven't already heard about this... we have a Christmas collection due out this year and I'm so excited!! Introducing... CHRISTMAS FIGS, due out in stores in June 2018 just in time for all of those wonderful projects that all of you organized ladies and gentlemen start on in July! 

The collection is filled with fabulous red, green and ivory blender prints with a few Christmas prints thrown in. But the rest of them are perfect for those not so "in your face" Christmas projects that I prefer. The red is a wonderful cherry, Christmas red, saturated and full of warm red goodness. The greens are good strong grass and apple greens with a bit more blue in it than our standard greens. There are two tones, one a bit warmer and one stronger... both are perfect with that red! And the ivory... well it is a wonderful soft creamy color that is the perfect background to everything else!

With this lovely fabric that is coming in June, we are featuring 5 PATTERNS which are now all ready in our shop. We are still finishing some of them up so more official pictures will have to come later!

We have partnered with the lovely ladies at the Fat Quarter Shop and published our popular Classic Yuletide block of the month program as a book entitled Christmas Figs BOM  [ just like the fabric that it is created with]. The book is due out in May to coincide as closely as possible with the fabric. The book consists of the full sampler quilt as well as 10 extra projects with some of the individual blocks from the book. Wow... we are loving how it is coming together!

We are also running a different block of the month with the CHRISTMAS FIGS fabric and its called WOODLAND WONDERLAND. It is a mystery and all we know is that it features the fabric shown below and that it will certainly contain some woodland critters such as a hedgehog and some yummies such as mushrooms! We couldn't pass up the opportunity to work with the new Christmas Figs fabric and our favorite charcoal cross weave background...

Peppermint Bark with My Kids!

This is a project that I do with my daughter for winter break... not even necessarily Christmas but any time in the winter. It is the most simple idea and any age kids can do it! We break ours up and put them in mason jars for teacher and neighbor gifts. So simple and so fun to make!

 

 

Ingredients:
2 packages semisweet or dark chocolate chips

2 packages white chocolate chips

2 tsp. peppermint extract- 1 tsp. for each chocolate [more or less if you want it more or less minty]

a handful of candy canes or peppermint candies crushed [put candy in a ziploc bag and crush with mallet. Don't turn it into dust... you want some nicer chunks]

 

 

 

 

 

 

Instructions:

1. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
   
2. Melt the semisweet chocolate in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring as you go for 1 to 5 minutes, depending on your microwave. Don't overheat! Stir in the peppermint extract [taste it to see if you want more mint flavor]. Spread the chocolate evenly on the sheet.
   
3. Chill until the chocolate has set, about 30 minutes. You can do this in the fridge... or depending on where you live, just set it outside!
   
4. Meanwhile, melt the white chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring as you go for 1 to 5 minutes (depending on your microwave). Don't overheat! Stir in the peppermint extract [taste it to see if you want more mint flavor]. Spread the white chocolate mixture evenly over the dark chocolate. Sprinkle the crushed candy cane pieces over the top. If you want you can press slightly into the chocolate with the palm of your hand. Chill for about an hour. Break into small pieces and package up! We package ours into mason jars and tie up with tags and ribbon.

The week and days before Christmas always disappear like a complete blur around here and I always find myself wishing I could slow it all down and take it in more. But since that is a bit unlikely to happen today as we are almost ready to sit down to our traditional Polish Christmas Eve meal.... I thought I would just share a few snippets of our home and send them to yours.

Poinsetta Flour Sack Towels

Hello Everyone!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I am still recovering from the 12 DAYS SALE around here... and I definitely mean "ing" in that I'm definitely not done recovering! Yes, there has been  A LOT of couch time this weekend... A LOT! Although the one that we managed to accomplish is that my house is now decorated!! I am so excited. Christmas kind of explodes at our house each year and I can't wait to share some photos with you... hoping for tomorrow!

But today I have a little gift for you!

I know, I know... you might be saying to yourself, again with the flour sack towels! But seriously they are affordable, quick and fun projects that we just can't resist around here. You know when people say that a project can be made in an hour or two and then it takes you the rest of the day to figure it all out? I might be guilty of the same thing once in a while... but not with these. When I say these can be done in an hour or two, I really do mean it!

In fact, you can make them as simple or as complicated as you want. They should have the band on the bottom but then you can add appliqué and embroidery if you want but you don’t have to if you want to go simple. I love them!

 

 

This particular towel was a part of our 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS SALE in 2015 and made with a bit of wool and our Farmhouse collection. This year in 2016 we had a new Christmas towel called Mistletoe Kisses that we love too [that will be a pattern soon] but thought we would offer this POINSETTIA TOWEL today as our gift to you.

Happy, Happy Friday Everyone!

Wow... we have together made it to the last day of this crazy 12 day sale! Thank you so much for sticking it out with us. Some of you have filled box after box and some of you just a few stocking stuffers here and there but I want to thank each one of you for following along and participating with us. This is the 6th year we have done this and although it is nuts and we know that each year a few people are unhappy that they didn't get what they wanted, most of you have a great time and enjoy the spirit of this sale!

SPECIAL INFO ABOUT THE LAST DAY

The last day of the sale is a little different than all the rest. Those of you committed to this sale have become so incredibly good at checking the moment we go live and grabbing your goodies right away, that it is like a Black Friday sale around her every day and we are cleaned out of most fabric items in minutes.

For Friday, we will start to post some products at in the earlier morning PST, then some throughout the morning so as to give the best chance to as many different people… or perhaps even a better chance to some who haven't been too lucky yet. We will not send out any other notifications about when or what!

Given the random times and varying stock of the items we are posting, we won't be showing the items here. If you find them and want them, nab them.

TWO PURPLE GLOVES [I know, I know, purple is not really my thing but no other color rhymes with turtle!:-)]

A COUPLE REALLY IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW...

1. Boxes will start to ship [for many of you, your first box has already filled and you are on your second box] by noon on Friday. So if you want to add patterns or other things to your box, do so in the morning so you don't miss out. Think about adding patterns, cream background fabric or some of your favorite notions to that lovely little box of goodies. The leftover gift items WILL BE ON SALE TODAY so don't forget those! Also, don't forget to check out THE NOTIONS SHOP for all of our favorites!
2. We will stop adding products at noon PST so you don't need to keep checking after that.
3. We are more or less unable to make any more of most of the kits that were offered during the sale. We are however going to be making more of the AND THE STOCKINGS WERE HUNG quilt from Thursday since it is a brand new pattern. If you are interested in that kit AFTER & SEPARATE FROM YOUR 12 DAYS BOX, YOU NEED TO EMAIL ME [email protected]. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN GET ADDED TO THE LIST.
4. But… we are sometimes able to get more of the notions and gift items after the sale is over. If you are still dieing for one or more of the gift or notion items, let us know right away [like today would be great :-)]. If we get enough requests for something, we create a list and order more if the products are still available from the distributor. As long as you are okay if they ship out after Christmas, and not as a part of this sale, we are good. So don't hesitate to ask… as they say, it never hurts to ask!
5. If you bought a box and didn't fill it [or not at all for some reason] and your items will go in an envelope... WE WILL TAKE THE DIFFERENCE OF APP. $6 AND DONATE IT TO OUR LOCAL FOOD BANK. * Each special offer will only become available on that one day. Each goodie will only be available while stock lasts. Most of the items offered will sell out on that day, some will last a few days. Just like in past years of the 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS we offer you the choice to hold all of your daily goodies to be shipped together at the end of the sale so you can save money on the shipping costs and keep adding goodies throughout the 12 days! Its an awesome option and a lot of fun! This year we are continuing our special shipping system, called "BUY-A-BOX" and have made a few changes/additions.

 

This is how it will work:

 

Given how popular this sale is, and how crazy it is for us, we have had to simplify some of our processes! This year, regardless of whether you think you will get the smaller stocking stuffer kinds of items or the "bigger ticket" items and you are a die hard 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS fan, you have to BUY-A-BOX as your shipping option. If your goodies "spill" out of the medium box, we will upgrade you to a large box... AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. Once your large box fills, we will send it to you along with an email that your box has shipped. Depending on what day of the sale it is and if you plan on continuing for the remaining days, you will then be able to decide if you wish to buy another box in order to continue with the sale or not.

 

If your box does not fill throughout the sale and all we need is an envelope, WE WILL DONATE THE SHIPPING DIFFERENCE TO OUR LOCAL FOOD BANK. We will downgrade those orders into envelopes, calculate the difference and once we have everyone's "donations", we will let everyone know via our newsletter what that amount is and donate it to the Alameda County Food Bank. IN FACT WE WILL MATCH ANY AMOUNT THAT GETS ACCUMULATED FROM UNUSED SHIPPING CHARGES AND ADD THAT TO THE CHECK. So please don't worry about whether or not you are going to fill up your box. OUR KIT OF THE DAY:

 We love flour sack kitchen towels and use them every single day. Embellishing them just a little bit for each season is one of our favorite hand projects and makes them an immediate Christmas "decoration" or a thoughtful gift.. First up, PEPPERMINT JELLY

  

…..One of my favorite 12 Days things to do is to find some of my favorite Fig Tree patterns and redo them with Christmas motifs. Jelly Girl was one of our first best selling jelly roll patterns and it goes together like a dream with no y-seams or special rulers. I thought it was high time we say a Peppermint Jelly version of this quilt! Kit includes the reds, greens and creams that you see for this Christmas version. We used a few of our favorite cream prints and text for the fun variety in the backgrounds! Kit also includes binding and pattern. Size: app. 67" x 68 1/2".

 

JUNIPER & CHESTNUT

 

Juniper just begs to be remade a bit more Christmasy" than before so this time we used a Chestnut Street Jelly roll, tool all the red, green, grey and a few black and creams prints and made up some holiday trees. We saved the aquas, oranges, yellows, etc for another project… kind of like 2 in one! We used a few of our favorite cream prints and text for the fun variety in the backgrounds! EACH DAY WE WILL SEND OUT OUR NEWSLETTER, WRITE A BLOG POST AND TRY TO LET YOU KNOW VIA INSTAGRAM. 

THE MOST RELIABLE WAYS ARE THE NEWSLETTER AND INSTAGRAM. IF YOU SUBSCRIBE TO THE BLOG, THE SUBSCRIPTION OFTEN COMES LATE OR THE FOLLOWING DAY. THE DESCRIPTION OF THAT DAY'S PRODUCTS WILL BE ON THE BLOG EACH DAY BUT YOU MIGHT WANT ANOTHER FORM OF FINDING OUT THAT WE HAVE "GONE LIVE" FOR THAT DAY. GENERAL 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS INFO:

PLEASE READ AS SOME INFO HAS CHANGED

* The Fig Tree 12 Days of Christmas sale starts on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and lasts for 12 days [usually with a Sunday off here or there].

* Each day a different kit, stocking stuffer and/or home dec goodie will be advertised- on some days several of each! WE HAVE SO MANY YUMMY GOODIES THIS YEAR! Each day a special DAILY DEAL will be made as well.  

 

* Each special offer will only become available on that one day. Each goodie will only be available while stock lasts. Most of the items offered will sell out on that day, some will last a few days. Please believe us that some items will sell out crazy fast [in minutes] and some will last all day based on popularity and stock. Although we try and anticipate the demand, we are often surprised by your enthusiasm and are limited by how much stock we can carry of any given item. EACH DAY IS BASICALLY A LIMITED QUANTITY FLASH SALE.

 

* We never know which ones will sell out the fastest! If we are able to get more in stock of any popular product, we will try but we can't guarantee that anything that sells out will come back in stock. If they can, it will not be a part of the sale but something that we offer after Christmas for a separate January delivery. 

 

* For those of you who want to continue to purchase items throughout the 12 days of the sale but want us to hold your purchases for one shipment, YOU NEED TO BUY-A-BOX. SEE MORE INFO BELOW. The box is an actual product available on our homepage.  You only need to purchase it once either before the sale starts or on the first day that you purchase a 12DAYS item- but you need to purchase it as an actual product once. Then for all the remaining purchases you make, you will simply choose the "I BOUGHT A BOX" option in the shipping directions during the checkout process. 

 

 

 

BUY-A-BOX INFORMATION:

Just like in past years of the 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS we offer you the choice to hold all of your daily goodies to be shipped together at the end of the sale so you can save money on the shipping costs and keep adding goodies throughout the 12 days! Its an awesome option and a lot of fun! This year we are continuing our special shipping system, called "BUY-A-BOX" and have made a few changes/additions.

 

This is how it will work:

 

Given how popular this sale is, and how crazy it is for us, we have had to simplify some of our processes! This year, regardless of whether you think you will get the smaller stocking stuffer kinds of items or the "bigger ticket" items and you are a die hard 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS fan, you have to BUY-A-BOX as your shipping option. If your goodies "spill" out of the medium box, we will upgrade you to a large box... AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. Once your large box fills, we will send it to you along with an email that your box has shipped. Depending on what day of the sale it is and if you plan on continuing for the remaining days, you will then be able to decide if you wish to buy another box in order to continue with the sale or not.

 

If your box does not fill throughout the sale and all we need is an envelope, WE WILL DONATE THE SHIPPING DIFFERENCE TO OUR LOCAL FOOD BANK. We will downgrade those orders into envelopes, calculate the difference and once we have everyone's "donations", we will let everyone know via our newsletter what that amount is and donate it to the Alameda County Food Bank. IN FACT WE WILL MATCH ANY AMOUNT THAT GETS ACCUMULATED FROM UNUSED SHIPPING CHARGES AND ADD THAT TO THE CHECK. So please don't worry about whether or not you are going to fill up your box. The extra $7 or so that you might not end up needing will go to a very worthy cause during this holiday time. Thank you in advance!!

 

The biggest change from previous years [but the same as last year] - for those of you who have participated before- is that once your allotted box has filled, WE WILL NEED TO SHIP IT AND YOU CAN DECIDE IF YOU WISH TO PURCHASE ANOTHER BOX AND KEEP SHOPPING THE SALE FURTHER. This is still a fabulous shipping deal! Not only because we will be upgrading you one shipping category at our cost, but because you can keep shopping knowing that we will continue to put items in your box until we absolutely cannot add anything else! BELIEVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU THAT THE ELVES TAKE GREAT PLEASURE IN FILLING EVERY LAST CREVICE BEFORE THEY SHIP YOUR BOX. The reason we are changing the shipping from the past is because of the sheer volume of customers that outgrew their box multiple times. The result was a bit more chaos than the elves knew what to do with around her toward the end of the sale!

 

So here are your steps:

1. So that you are ready for the sale on Friday, BUY-A BOX now so that you can focus on purchasing your items once they start going up on Day #1. Given how quickly the items go, etc, buying your box ahead of time is your best bet!

 

2. When you are buying your goodies, select the "I BOUGHT A BOX" choice in the shipping drop down menu so that you are not charged for shipping each time you place a new item in your box. This is basically your free shipping option for the rest of the items [until you fill your box].

3. If you do not select "I BOUGHT A BOX" as your shipping option when you purchase items, we will assume that you wish to receive the product right away and you want it shipped right away and you do not wish to accumulate items. Believe it or not, there are many customers for whom this is their own personal Christmas and they look forward to receiving the packages each and every day. Enjoy! 

4.Please know that if you forget to select the "I BOUGHT A BOX" option for shipping during checkout, we will not be able to change it. Due to the sheer volume of 12 DAYS customers, we really only have the opportunity to see what is chosen and ship or not ship based on the info you have provided during checkout.
