I'm sure you have noticed that every 3 months or so another little QUILTS & MORE: SCRAP LAB project shows up the doorstep of our blog. Well, its that time again.
It seems that each time we wrap it all up and think that we are done, its time to work on another scrappy goody for the folks at SCRAP LAB. Who knew, but apparently you guys are a little crazy about the SCRAP LAB feature and keep asking for more stuff. Thanks guys! I sure hope Camille and I [and all our guest friends] don't run out of ideas!
As usual I am not quite "on top of it all" enough to know [or if I did know, then remember] when the magazine hits the newsstands and when I am supposed to talk about it, but when QUILTS & MORE starts tweeting about the issue and I see it for sale online, I guess its safe to assume that I can blog about it. So here goes...
This time around we got to use a bit of my latest collection, California Girl, [you never know what they're going to throw at us, those crazy Quilts & More ladies] so it was super fun for me to whip up a little scrappy project for you out of my own creations! Our challenge this time around was to use a charm pack and a 1/2 yd. ivory solid fabric. Even the binding had to be from the charm pack. I have to tell you that even though you might not know it in the midst of the design process, I am really loving the challenge of using only what I have in front of me. Its kinda liberating in a funny kind of way.
So anyway, this is my contribution to this SCRAP LAB feature. As soon as I see any blogs or posts about the other projects [they are super-duper cute btw], I will add them here..... or at least tell you about them. I think you will love our guest this time around. We always love our guests... but kinda especially love this one. She is fabulous.
So... its super simple and a great beginner project or something that you can literally whip up in an afternoon. Small enough for you to easily practice your quilting on. Bound with scraps of the charm squares.
FAQ's:
The instructions & pattern are all in the latest SUMMER ISSUE '12 of QUILTS & MORE.
The magazine is available now. It is sold at many grocery stores, chain fabric stores and of course most of your local quilt shops. It is also available on-line.
We do not sell the magazine here at Fig Tree.
We do sell the kit for the project here at Fig Tree. If you are interested,CLICK here. The kits contains all the fabric you need for the top including the binding. The backing is not included. We used plain cream solid from our stash.
I know its not nice to pick favorites when you have multiple "kids", but these days this one is definitely my favorite. Shhh... don't tell the other ones!
It was so beautiful the other day that I couldn't resist the opportunity to snap a few shots.
This week has been kit cutting week around here. If you have been waiting patiently for your kit lovelies to come, they are on their way! Once we wrap our heads around what is left next week, we will let you know what we might have left.
As we were throwing out piles and piles and piles of cardboard bolts, we snapped a few shots to share.
Let's just say that we are ready for the weekend and hope you enjoy yours!
BTW, for all of you who have commented and emailed about my dad's health.... I can't even tell you how much that means to me. Thank you so much for your thoughts, hopes and prayers for him and us. Will share more later but I just wanted all of you to know that your kindness does not go unnoticed. I appreciate each and every one of you.
Welcome to Day #8 of the 12 Days of Christmas: Fig Tree Style! Each day we will have a different kit, a different sale and even a few giveaways along the way. Join us each day so that you don't miss out on a single thing. We are so excited to share all of our goodies with you!
Day #8
So.... we took a little weekend break. Santa's elves apparently went out for a much needed latte break on friday afternoon and didn't come back until this morning. I guess all these sale orders just plain tuckered them out!
Oh... and we saw a little Nutcracker and will share a few photos tomorrow. Thanks for all of your emails and comments about your own Nutcracker experiences. It was really fun to read and hear about all those childhood stories.
Another one of my absolutely favorite stocking stuffers for your favorite sewers and quilters. The Clover Desk Needle Threader.
I know that many of us might not want to admit that we need the help of a needle threader... but we do! And if don't technically need one, we could still sure use one! I can tell you from experience that from the first day I tried this one, I have been in love with its cute little self. It sits right next to my sewing machine and another one in my travel kit. I literally don't leave home without them

Day #3
Today we are sharing a couple of different things...
I have to mention before we start that we only have a few of these kits available as they are overstock from our recent retail show. If the website says $0 when you try to click it, that means they are already sold out. We always have the patterns in stock, but the kits are very limited. We are not able to make any more of these due to lack of the fabrics. We do not have any kits for the other Postage Stamp Series patterns. Good luck everyone!
This series is inspired by my collection of vintage postage stamps and postcards as I am in love with the abundance of charming images that I keep finding when I take the time to look through them all! This series is smaller than our previous series, the Vintage Postcard Collection.
Here the "Postage Stamps" are all app 18" x 21" and perfect for that little corner nook of the wall that needs something handmade it in! Also wonderful to display on your door as a seasonal quilt.
So far there are 6 patterns in the series with more on the way in the spring and summer of next year....
For more information on the patterns, click here and click on the "Larger Image".
Up first, we have the Vintage Skate Postage Stamp Kit.
This kits contain all you will need to make this wall hanging sized quilt- the backgrounds and borders, the applique fabric and wool components, the pattern, the floss and the binding. A perfect size to make as a gift or for decorating your own home for the holidays.
12 Days of Christmas Special Day #3:
Postage Stamp kits are 15% off [through Tuesday].
Postage Stamp PATTERNS are also 15% off and remember that all patterns have FREE SHIPPING during our entire Christmas sale!
Welcome to Day #2 of the 12 Days of Christmas: Fig Tree Style! Each day we will have a different kit, a different sale and even a few giveaways along the way. Join us each day so that you don't miss out on a single thing. We are so excited to share all of our goodies with you!
Today we are sharing some of my favorite little scissors. I am sure that many of you know that I am a complete sucker for polka dots and for lovely colors. It is definitely one of my weaknesses! When we discovered these... well we were completely smitten. I couldn't decide which color I wanted for myself so I got all three and we decided to carry them as well!
Perfect for you and your sewing room, lovely for little gifts and also perfect as stocking stuffers
Polka Dot Scissors are 20% off today [through Monday]!!
ADDENDUM:
The scissors we had in stock sold out unbelievably fast and we are looking to see if we can order more but they are currently backordered at the distributor level. We will have more information later in the week. They are $5.00, $4.00 on sale.
We will let you know later this week if we were able to order more and we will keep the sale price for all of the folks who were not able to order them today.
Welcome to Day #1 of the 12 Days of Christmas: Fig Tree Style! Each day we will have a different kit, a different sale and even a few giveaways along the way. Join us each day so that you don't miss out on a single thing. We are so excited to share all of our goodies with you!
I guess today is part 12 Days of Christmas Post and part Pattern Debut, since we haven't gotten a chance to show you this brand new pattern yet!
SCHOOLDAY SATCHELS
One of my favorite new patterns this fall is the SchoolDay Satchel. Both bags are fashioned after my favorite little everyday bag- one just much bigger than the other. I use both bags every day and I absolutely love each for the purpose that they serve- the little one is my favorite little everyday purse and the Laptop bag is, well, my perfect, classy, unique laptop bag that goes with me pretty much everywhere!
Its not often that I get to keep the prototypes that we make for the pattern cover but I just haven't been able to resist either one of these!
First up, the little satchel...
... the perfect little handbag size.
... both sizes together. The perfect combination!
... another view. Buckles are decorative on both versions. Both bags are simple and basic and accessible to any level of sewer. No complicated assemblies here!
Kits for this version available, here. See special offer below!
Second up, the laptop version of the exact same satchel. The pattern cover shows it in a brighter red version but we have also made it up in this wonderful dark grey version from French General, meant as a perfect neutral combination for any outfit.
... front of the laptop bag. One pocket on the front outside just like on the purse version. Fully lined inside.
... just a little closer in. A little bit of simple hardware goes a long way to make both of these bags look quite "professional' with very little extra work.
Since we have been completely remiss in showing you all of the new goodies that we introduced at Market, I thought I'd start with the ones that you might want to be making soon...or like right now!
Introducing the MINI STOCKINGS pattern!
For us a lot of the time, we want something simple and fun in between the more involved and time consuming projects as it gives us something completely different to work on and it gives us almost instantaneous results. Sometimes I am all about the instant gratification LOL! This was our favorite solution to that problem!
These little guys are so much fun to make whether you choose to spend a bit more time and make them scrappy or go for the quick project and make them all out of one fabric. Fun to make together with friends, with your kids or just on your own for a little holiday project.
Perfect for small gifts for friends- filled with some goodies, to hang on your door, for teacher presents or to decorate just about any nook or cranny of your home!
... scrappy patchwork, romantic pink or our strawberry version, all together on a door.
... the main scrappy version. We have a few kits of this guy here.
... I love them all three in a row!
... for those of you who prefer the more pink, romantic holiday deco... this would be a cute choice. Pink and grey!

Well hello MODA Blog Hoppers, I guess today must be my day to wow you with favorite fair food answers and random trivia about my life. Hope you are ready! We always like to give our guruLissa a hard time but truth be told, we usually have quite a bit of fun playing along. So here goes...
MY FAVORITE FAIR FOOD:
CHEESE ON A STICK It’s not nearly as bad as it sounds, I promise.
In fact I guess its not really a fair food at all but since its on a stick, I’m making an executive decision and listing it as mine. Its actually a shopping mall food!! Do you have a Hotdog on a Stick stand in your mall food fair? If you do, then you know exactly what I am talking about. If you don’t, you really ought to search one out the next time you are feeling like fried cheese. What is my excuse for eating this thing? I grew up with one in my local mall and as a teenager just couldn't resist it!
... chocolate covered orange peel. OMG.
MY GUILTY PLEASURE:
CHOCOLATE & ORANGE in any combination. The easiest to get are the chocolate covered orange sticks from Trader Joe’s although if my hub wants to bring me a special treat, he will go and acquire chocolate covered orange peel from a "real" chocolate store which is my favorite indulgence in the world!
... my favorite vintage wooden spools with some autumn leaves.
SOME THINGS FROM MY BUCKET LIST:
• Visit the South of France.
• Learn to knit. I have tried before... many times... but I just can't seem to get the hang of it!
• Go to Ireland.
• Have time to drag out my pottery wheel and make stuff. Lots of stuff.
• See the leaves turn in the autumn in New England.
• Build a cute chicken coop and have chickens in our backyard.
• Plant an entire English country garden.
• Take my best friend to Poland to see my “homeland”
• Road trip across the entire US with all of my kids and not have anyone kill each other during the time.
• Own a bed and breakfast or an inn.
... my autumn decorating is starting slowly. More tea drinking than anything else.
WHAT INSPIRES MY WORK:
COLOR. For me, it is always about the color palette. It comes in many forms and from many places such as flea markets, travel, giftwrap, vintage textiles, gardens, etc. Regardless of where I am or what I am looking at, it seems that color is always the first thing that I notice and that draws me in. After that comes design, proportion, combinations and all the rest.
... some of us here are still holding on to a little bit of summer with our vacation bracelets.
RANDOM JOANNA FACTS...
Factoid #1: I sing when no one is listening ALL THE TIME. I sing when my kid’s friends are around in order to embarrass them. I sing when people are around and they shouldn’t have to put up with my singing.
... our newest collection, Butterscotch & Rose, coming to stores in October. Precuts are shipping now!
Factoid #2: We only watch what we TIVO. It is so bad that last year, we turned on live TV for something and our youngest daughter couldn’t understand why on earth we couldn’t fast forward through the commercials. She had never watched live tv as far as she could remember!!!
... a tiny sneak peek of something coming up
Factoid #3: In our house, my hub is the one who enjoys watching his favorite movies over and over again ad nauseum. Me, I watch the James Bond movies when my dad is visiting. I can relive my high school days by watching Dirty Dancing and Footloose any time they are on tv [and I AM NOT HAPPY that they are remaking either] but other than that, I'm not much of a movie repeater.
... my favorite bucket list item right now & the subject of my project below
.. I've grown attached to these two. Kind of feel like I should name them.
COUNTRY FAIR PROJECT:
For my COUNTRY FAIR PROJECT, I thought I would share a little Chicken Scratch. Click on link below for the pdf file of the pattern. This project is now a pattern. Please visit our website to see all the patterns!
After we made this project we liked it so much that we thought we might make it into a regular Fig Tree Threads patterns after the Blog Hop is done. So it will be here available for free download for the next week or so and then it will become a regular pattern.
We have also made up a fewKITS for Chicken Scratch. Kit includes the flour sack towel, all the fabric and floss you will need and a printed out version of the pattern. Click here for more info.
And if you haven't had enough yet, here is my video from the MODA Blog Hop at Spring Market. Why is it always so painful to watch yourself on film? Anyone, anyone?
